Acupuncture
Emerging evidence suggests that acupuncture treatments activate distinct brain regions to regulate imbalances between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Acupuncture seeks to restore wellness and prevent diseases by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which is responsible for the body’s rest and digest response, while it is down regulating the sympathetic activities (SNS), which governs fight or flight stress response. This dual action prepares the whole body for optimal homeostasis, influencing many organs systems to restore their balance at a cellular level. Studies have shown that acupuncture can increase the levels of neurotransmitters (e,g, serotonin & norepinephrine’s, endorphins), helping to ease depression, reduce anxiety, regulate blood pressure, relieve pain, and reduce inflammation. Acupuncture may also promote other chemicals to be released by the brain, including hormones that swift the self-regulating system of the body and boost immune system.
While conventional medicine uses drugs and surgery to treat the symptoms of the diseases, acupuncturists rely on the body’s natural healing abilities (pain-reliving neurotransmitters and parasympathetic activities) to maintain health and prevent disease. It is an integrative approach, which uses the combination of both systems, and promotes an ideal environment of health.
